Many people begin the new year with resolutions like:
- “I’m going to the gym.”
- “I need to lose weight.”
- “It’s time to get things straight.”
We often feel the pressure to start immediately, pushing ourselves into action without taking a moment to reflect. But what if, instead of rushing, we pause?
The Art of Pausing
Starting the year with a pause allows us to:
- Celebrate achievements – Acknowledge what we’ve accomplished, even the small wins.
- Appreciate overlooked moments – Notice things we might have dismissed.
- Express gratitude – Thank the people and experiences that have shaped us.
- Reflect on the journey – Recognize the steps that brought us here.
- Let go of the past – Release goals we couldn’t accomplish and relationships that no longer serve us.
This intentional pause isn’t about stopping; it’s about recalibrating and making mindful decisions moving forward.
Reflection Before Action
Taking time to reflect helps us identify what has worked and what hasn’t. Ask yourself:
- What worked well last year?
- What didn’t work, and why?
- What changes should I make?
- Why did I set certain goals in the first place?
Revisiting these questions allows us to align our goals with our true purpose and avoid overwhelming ourselves with unrealistic expectations.
Avoiding the Overload
Often, we tend to overload ourselves with tasks and goals, biting off more than we can chew. Instead of rushing ahead, taking small, mindful steps can lead to greater progress. Sometimes, stepping back allows us to move forward more effectively.
The Importance of Self-Check-ins
Before jumping into new commitments, it’s crucial to check in with ourselves in all aspects of life:
- Physical health – How is my body feeling?
- Mental health – Am I experiencing stress or burnout?
- Emotional well-being – How am I managing my emotions?
- Spiritual growth – Am I staying true to my values and beliefs?
Taking a Pause is Empowering
Pausing isn’t about procrastination—it’s about reflection, awareness, and preparation. It helps us avoid diving headfirst into situations that might not serve us in the long run.
Take a pause. It can be beneficial for so many reasons, and here’s why:
- It allows clarity and focus.
- It prevents burnout.
- It gives space for gratitude and growth.
Final Thoughts
This year, instead of making empty promises, consider taking intentional pauses throughout your journey. Reflect, reset, and move forward with purpose. After all, a thoughtful step back can be more powerful than blindly rushing ahead.
And the good news after my pause this year, I am taking on the responsibility of being a Vent over Tea blog writer. Please look forward to more wellness reading 🙂

Nora has spent 14+ years perfecting the art of compassionate listening—and she still hasn’t run out of tea. A program planner, counselor, life coach, and unofficial soul doctor, she’s basically a Swiss Army knife for all things wellness, education, and community. Whether she’s managing volunteers, designing culturally sensitive programs, or helping learners conquer digital literacy, Nora does it all with a mix of empathy, humour, and a bottomless cup of tea. She’s also a self-proclaimed circle breaker—unlearning old norms, challenging stereotypes, and proving that “because we’ve always done it this way” is the worst excuse ever. When she’s not helping people navigate life’s challenges, you’ll find her facilitating workshops on JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion), hosting meaningful conversations, and ensuring spaces are as welcoming as a warm cup of chai. Oh, and if you ever need someone to craft a two-page medical resume, explain Tuckman’s Theory in the most entertaining way possible, or lead an inclusive discussion that actually makes an impact? She’s got you—just bring the tea. And if your soul needs a break, we’ll collectively have a healing talk. 🤍 ✨
